They thought that it would be easier to land people and equipment. It was the largest military assualt and it required lots of planning. They designed a huge campaign to knock the Germans off course so they would be shocked my the surprise attack. In late August of 1944, Northern France was liberated and then in Spring, the Allies defeated Germany.

Who was the leader of D-Day and what did he do? |
The leader of Operation Overlord was General Dwight Eisnhower. Due to his successes, he was promoted to Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force for the invasion of Europe. Eisnhower's job was to surprise the Germans in the time and place of the landings on June 6, 1944. He didn't know whether or not this plan woulf work so he drafted out letters both for the success and failure of the plan. Eisnhower then launched a second landing in the south of France to trap the Germans in converging pincers and force them to retreat from
France. In 1952, he was then elected for President. |
What was the first plan other than Operation Overlord? |
The first plan was the COSSAC plan which means Combined Anglo-American. It was created to use two airborne brigades to protect the flanks of the three landings in Normandy. There was an amendment for the plan that Montegomery added. He wanted it so he can attack the beaches and assign the beaches to a specific army. Eisnhower supported this plan.
